Faroe Islands is a big shame

The sea is stained in red and its not because of the climate effects of nature. It’s because of the cruelty that the human beings (civilised human) kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins. This happens every year in Feroe iland in Denmark. In this slaughter the main participants are young teens. To show that they are adults and mature. Everyone is participating in one way or the other, killing or “supporting like a spectator” this cruelty. Is it necessary to mention that the dolphin calderon, like all the other species of dolphins, it’s near instinction and they get near men to play and interact. They don’t die instantly; they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hocks. And at that time the dolphins produce a grim extremely compatible with the cry of a new born child. But he suffers and there’s no compassion till this sweet being slowly dies in its own blood. IT’S ! Take care of the world, it is your home!

Good points, I think I will definitely subscribe! I’ll go and read some more! What do you see the future of this being?
At least tell the full story. Pilot whales are listed on the Red List of Threatened Species, but as “Lower Risk; conservation dependent”. And sure it’s all bloody and stuff but it’s like that in every slaughter house.

Denmark a big shame… Give me a break!
The Faroe Islands have been an autonomous province of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948, and holds executive power in local government affairs (which include Fisheries and Conservation of Fish in the Territory).
And on a more personal note, this is in no way more horrible than all other butchery of mammal (except its done in the open).
While the images are compelling, the text is poorly written and any educated reader would not be able to draw a well-based conclusion about this subject. I’m sorry, but try to actually give evidence that supports your argument, such as citing scholarly sources. They will be able to support your remarkable photographs.
JAWsome
Seriously?! Did you even bother looking up the Faeroe Islands before posting this dribble? It is NOT Denmark. It is an autonomous state (with the exception of foreign politics, where it falls under the commonwealth of “the Kingdom of Denmark”), there is nothing Danish about it, they don’t even bother speaking our language – and you will most certainly find no sympathy for these actions with any Danes, only contempt.
The Grind is a centuries old tradition in the geography, it has been done since before “and save us from the fury of the Norsemen” was added to the Lords Prayer in the Dark Ages. Vikings would pillage Southern Europe when the weather was calm, and then head home before winter just in time to catch the cetacean migration to stock up on meat and whale oil for burning. I’m not saying that it is a humane practice, but it is an ancient one.
As for ‘civilized humans’, I do not think we have had a single major society/empire that has not relied on torturing other ‘civilized’ humans with rocks, hooks, knives, racks, waterboards, etc to maintain a power base. While it may now be unnecessary for those of the northern islands to kill a bunch of whales to sustain themselves every year, appealing to the inherent kindness and civility of humanity as the justification for the practices cessation is beyond laughable. If anything we should be happy they aren’t out slaughtering albino people for magic talismans like they still do in parts of Africa, or bringing down the ethnic cleansing on other social groups that don’t jive with their worldview. Denmark does a far better job of taking care of its human inhabitants than most developed nations, I’m not going to knock them.
WTF this is so wrong.
Yes, it’s brutal.
However, pilot whales are not in danger due to this practise, which accounts for, what, 20 animals per year? It’s a tradition, how you judge it is up to you, but someone somewhere will be absolutely against the traditions you enjoy at which time you’ll argue from the other side.
If you want to get excited about something, get excited about shark finning. 70 million sharks are caught per year, have their fins cut off, and the rest of their body is dumped back in the sea still alive where they die slowly. This practise allows asians to enjoy shark fin soup. Why is it so sought after? Simply because it used to be a delicacy of kings, but now everyone can have it so have it they do: it’s the common fayre at weddings. The tragedy is, it just adds texture to the soup, no flavour at all. Shark fin soup is flavoured by chicken stock and seasoning.
You may not like sharks, but sharks are tertiary consumers so they largely control ocean habitats. If this rate of shark destruction continues, it will have a knock on effect to all life in the sea. This not only means that coral reefs will die and fish species will then die out as they have no food (with no sharks, there will be a population explosion that destroys their food resources), but also the bacteria in the sea that produce most of the Earth’s oxygen supply will die out. Wiping out sharks means the death of all life on earth. All in the name of a quick buck.
Direct your anger accurately. A few boys on a small island aren’t the issue.
You cannot use the Faroe Islands and Denmark interchangeably. The Faroe Islands is an autonomous province with full control of their own affairs. Denmark has nothing to do with this.
Dear xxxxxxx
Thank you for your recent letter regarding whaling in the Faroes.
Your concern and interest is greatly appreciated. We are well aware that media and campaign reports about whaling in the Faroes can be very disturbing when presented out of context, without a reliable and factual explanation of the circumstances, regulations and management measures in place. We are therefore grateful for this opportunity to provide you with some basic facts about the Faroes and our utilisation of whales. More detailed information is available on the websites listed below.
The Faroes are a self-governing nation under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. The Faroese Parliament legislates independently of Denmark on all areas of self-government, including the conservation and management of fish and whale stocks within the 200-mile fisheries zone. Unlike Denmark, the Faroes are not a member of the EU, but maintain bilateral trade agreements and bilateral fisheries agreements with the EU and a number of other countries, including our nearest neighbours, Norway and Iceland.
Pilot whales and other small whales are utilised for food in the Faroes and represent one of very few local sources of meat. Both the meat and blubber of pilot whales have for centuries been a staple part of the national diet. Whale drives are fully regulated by law and regulations and catches are shared on a community basis among the participants in a whale drive and residents of the local district where the whales are landed. The annual average catch of around 900 whales is roughly equivalent to 500 tonnes of meat and blubber, some 30% of all meat produced locally in the Faroes.
Scientists estimate the stock in the North Atlantic to be over 700,000, which means that the average catch is fully sustainable. Only schools of whales that are sighted close to shore are utilised. Continuous annual catch statistics dating back to around 1600 make Faroese whaling one of the best documented uses of a natural resource anywhere in the world.
Faroese animal welfare legislation, which also applies to whaling, requires that animals suffer as little as possible when killed. Entire schools of whales are killed on the shore and in the shallows of bays especially authorised for the purpose. Knives are used to sever the major blood supply to the brain. This is the most efficient and humane means of killing a school of beached pilot whales quickly and safely, but naturally results in a lot of blood in the water. Killing methods in Faroese whaling are subject to regular veterinary monitoring programmes, which examine the times-to-death of individual animals in the hunt and the efficiency of the organisation of the drive and the equipment used.
The Faroes cooperate internationally through NAMMCO – the North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission on the conservation of whales and the management of whaling, which includes valuable technical cooperation with other countries in the region on hunting methods, as well as an international observation scheme to ensure international transparency and oversight in national regulations.
Internationally adopted principles for the conservation and sustainable use of living marine resources apply to all components of the marine ecosystem, including both fish and whales. Ensuring that utilisation of these resources is sustainable requires a sound scientific basis and international cooperation on the conservation and management of shared and highly migratory stocks. As a small nation highly dependent on the resources of the sea, commitment to upholding these principles is a priority for the Faroes.
Yours sincerely,

This is a goddamn shame whether its done in Denmark or the Faeroes, but its nothing compared to whats happening in Taiji, Japan You guys should definitely get a hold on the documentary “The Cove”.
It’s true, up to 2,000 are killed in the Faeroe Islands, but, up to 23,000 are killed each year in Taiji. They’re murdering endangered dolphins there in Japan to, on a much larger scale.
oh come on. they’ve done that for hundreds of years. its one of the main food supplies for the faroese people. they kill them the best way they can and use every bit of them and they do not try to extict the whale. that is the most narrow opinion i have ever seen…. open up and see the big perspective.
Wow that’s really sad. I forward this to everyone here at the John R. Carlisle Institute and they couldn’t believe it. Do they eat all these dolphins or what? I mean it looks like they harvested hundreds of them.
John R. Carlisle
OMG that was not good , but c’mon it’s just a fish
you people who think this is something that anyone can explain are all assholes… this is cruel, selfish, irational and everybody who agree with this kind of thing should die so the planet would be a little more clean…
@ alajeeb and any other ‘like-minded’ person
“…it’s just a fish”
That’s right. It’s just a fish. It serves no purpose other than to be killed for human food/sport/entertainment. Just like your worthless self serves as nothing but a target for my complete contempt.
Life, in any form, is not ‘just’ anything. It is a conscious being. It, like us, avoids pain and seeks pleasure. Just because you can’t see it as such, doesn’t mean it is ‘just’. You’re ‘just’ an uncaring, pathetic excuse of a human.
Please, go play in the traffic wearing earphones and dark glasses.

This is a Damned Shame, as is the killing of ANY animal for their parts and to consume! People need to WAKE UP before it is too late and our animals have become extinct because no one cared to speak up! I really don’t care what “ThatGuy” has to say about whale hunting. Our bodies are not designed to eat animal flesh of any kind. We were made by God’s design to eat vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, seeds, and berries! We should stop the slaughter of ALL animals for food, and we should stop slaughtering one another in war! This is disgusting!!!!
@alajeeb nope, it´s a mammal (as all dolphins and true whales).
and if the letter thatguy posted is true, then yeah, i have no issue whatsoever with this.
shame shame shame for all Denish people who did or doing this shameful act.
The Faroe Islands are not Denmark that’s like saying Iceland is Denmark I mean seriously you must be like so… anyway, who cares they can do whatever they want because it is their waters it’s not like they are doing what the Japanese are doing (killing whales in waters that don’t belong to them) and stop making articles that you don’t have proper info about eg. just making a story out of a picture, and if you are a 10 year old kid which you most likely are stop making this rubbish, you must be so uneducated to not know what countries are and that the Faroe Islands are separated from Denmark OH WAIT that’s right you’re an annoying little kid who is 10 and thinks he is cool. lol Bjarke Kara Oscar Legends, Thatguy completely owned you and fail at the guy that not only referred to the Faroese as Danish but he said it as Denish lol. Raven, you amuse me as you don’t want anyone/thing animal etc to be killed yet you want some people to go and die if the want animals to die which makes you a hypocrite. You call people who don’t care about fish dying as pathetic excuses of humans you must be worse/the same if you want humans to die therefore being a stupid 10 year old kid who contradicts everything he says and the same with Carol Eller seriously stop contradicting yourself and stop portraying yourself as hypocritical it makes you look so stupid and lame, also the Faroe Islands, Scandinavia, etc have among the best life quality and life expectancy I live in a Country which is equaled to that region, and it is fantastic you are probably jealous! Infact I live in a city that has been voted consistantly in the top 5 most liveable cities for the last 5-10 years! OWNED no PWNED ? Sorry about spelling/grammar errors had to write it quickly ? Out!
I’d like to point at to Bjarke Rune Dahl that “other mammal(s).” such as cows and pigs, aren’t as intelligent as dolphins. Not to say that it’s okay to slaughter them, but is less taboo.
Sharon I think you are using your personal morality to discribe ‘Gods design’. We are not herbivores (primarily plant eaters) but omnivores (able to eat of both plant and animal matter). If we were herbivores we would not be able to digest meat. If you choose to eat only plant material, that is a personal choice, not a ‘god design’(ed) biological limitation.
Just as an aside, living in the northern woodlands, I can tell you that you very seldom find bones or antlers in the forest. This is because after the carnavores and cairion eater are done, the herbivores will eat the remaining antlers and bones for the calcium in them. So even the herbivores do eat animal matter.
More importantly, I have no problem with your choice to eat only plant matter, until you attack people of another spirituality. I choose to follow my ‘Gods design’ and remain an omnivore. If you want others to respecdt your choice then it is encumbant of you to except other people following their own life choices.
@alajeeb : see dude its just a fish…or a mammal whatsoever..but whats your view on someone else killing YOU like that or any other person???use your civic sense dude…
wake up green peace, animal lover why this should happen in modern life.
this is not acceptable today, raise your hands and voices condemn this stupid and uncivilized ‘tradition’.
they are more than animal, even pig and dog have a love
Terarist act !!!!!!!!
Good people do good work but these dirty people of soul doing dirty things.
These mammals come to these men to interact out of curiosity. They are highly intelligent, emotional beings. Any person/MAN who can treat a living being this way deserves to be tortured in the most horrible way possible. SICK. SICK. SICK.
God did not create us, God does not save us, and God will not feed us. Why is it people believe in god? I think it’s because there scared of the real fact that we are all just an animal that lives then dies and we all eat each other. There are so many meat eaters on this planet and if these guy need to fish for food then we have no say about this. Everyone on the planet fish’s for food, even the dolphins!
BIG SHAME!!!! We should protect them not kill them, so that are children and grand-children can see this wonderful animals… BIG SHAME… your killing mother nature creations..
How would those people feel if animals/mammals would hunt 2000 (or however many) human beings a year just ’cause it’s TRADITION??! when an animal hunts humans, we immediately take action and put the animal out but just think.. what if it were the other way around..? them killing US for “TRADITION”. it’s cruel. cruel, cruel, CRUEL. they should stop doing that. dolphins come to us to play or for friendly interactions and THIS is what those people do??! it’s like a child approaching a pedophile! come on people.. have sympathy for the poor dolphins..
I can’t wait till next year, I’ll kill so many of those people. Then I’ll be able to prove I’m a big whale now. YEAH!
nice, i feel hungry for fish and chips!
Wow, we need to see pictures of the 40 Million plus babies aborted in the US. nuf said.
The authority of Denmark suck!
shame on the danish for not stopping this!!
they are all the same danish or faroe ANIMALS
WE ARE ALL THE SAME BLOODY KILLERS
DANISH ARE EVIL
HOW CAN EUROPE STAND BACK AND WATCH THE DANISH STARVE WE MUST HELP THEM COZ THEY LOOK REALLY HUNGERY. FORGET HAITI HELP THE DANISH THEY NEED IT
KÖCSÖGÖK
HELLO IGNORANT, Its spelled Denmark and Faroe Islands HAVE BEEN INDEPENDENT from Denmark for more than 50 years , that FIFTY, whoever posted this bullshit shold at least bother looking up the country,, even wikipedia would do.
Second of all , HOW THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOUR MEAT IS PROCESSED ???
Do you think they pet the animals to death at slaughterhouses ? NO ! they stick them in tiny cages then they stuff them with processed gains then they pump vitamins in them. Then they stuff them into even smaller boxes or trucks,, drive them for several 100rd’s of kilometers when they get gassed , bolt gunned to death or electrocuted AND THAT IS IF THEY LUCKY , otherwise they might end up at some religious slaughterhouse where they have the throat cut in some superstitious ritual where they over a longer period bleed to death while moaning.
The wakeup call is here , TRY TO FIND OUT HOW YOUR FOOD COME FROM ,,then see if your ethics can handle it, which it properly can since no-one gives a shit as long as no-one shoves bleeding grinds in their face.
I think this is their’s tradition, and why do you tell them what to do?
Who cares about tradition if it is animal cruelty? Eating humans was also a tradition and now it’s forbidden, whY? They are not even endangered species… if we think like a lot of “smart” people here. Poor Hannibal L.
It’s time to change/end traditions!!!
Why kill intelligent beings?
Especially if they are capable of complex emotions.
Men are not civilized.
One day I’ll visit your shitty island and fuck everyone off you in every fucking holes you have with the hooks you are usin’ motherfuckers!!! lalalalalalllaa
denmark out of EU!!!!
The meat tastes rather good, like a sweet beef
You guys are pussies. The points have been made about the slaughter of animals and I’m not going to repeat them, but you guys are seriously pussies. I’ll bet they make for some tasty seafood. I hear the more you torture them, the better they taste!
i’m from the faroe islands and i have somthing to say
i’m only 13 but listen.
you it pig and cows and chicken.
so what is wrong with eating whals?
I hope that you have somthing to say now!
I like to eat whale.
and sheep.
and birds.
and i’m sure that you like to eat some animals to
Fucka you dolphin! Fucka you whaaale!!!
Have you ever tasted whale? It is delicious. The main reason why people shout up about whales being killed is because they are cute and intelligent. Let me tell you something: A pig is at least as smart as a dog. Pig’s organs looks so familiar to human’s that they are often used in surgery. Pigs are cute too. Please, do not protest against whale capturing if you eat any sort of meat yourself.
This, to me, is no different than rounding up the herd to take to the slaughter house – it’s just really hard to haul a live dolphin to any sort of facility. Not to mention that this is a traditional part of their lifestyle, in a world where traditions are disappearing at an alarming rate, kudos to them for hanging onto their lifestyle.
As a final side note, if you look at the ‘cut’ placement – it’s just behind the skull along the topside of the animal – which means it severs the spinal cord and is probably as humane as they can manage.
OMg… …have pity to them…they don’t know what they’re doing…
it’s our lifestyle…
so stop saying all that bullshit
so if you eat some kind of meat!
stop that BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!
hehe…..there where whales in the faroe islands in the weekend and today….
Leave your response!
